Assalam u alaikum
I have understood that the official position of the Hanbali madhab is that wudu is invalidated for the one who has touched their private part.
With regards to the position of Ibn Tayimiyyah, there seems to be two opinions.
- According to Islamqa, the opinion favoured by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah is that doing wudu after touching the penis is mustahabb (and not obligatory) in all cases, even in the case of desire. (https://islamqa.info/en/82759)
- In the Umdat Al-fiqh translation by Dr Hatem al Hajj, the opinion attributed to Ibn Taymiyah is that wudu is only nullified if penis is touched with desire.
Can you please clarify what was actually his position. If you can provide a reference, that would be greatly appreciated.
Jazallahukhairan
There is some different reports from the Shaykh (رحمه الله) and in some answers he hesitated with the ruling. However, his final position most likely is that wudhu is recommended and not obligatory, regardless of whether it is with desire or not. And this is what was mentioned in ‘Al-Ikhtiyarat’ by Shaykh ‘Ala al-Din al-Ba’li and in ‘Al-Insaf’ by Imam al-Mardawi, both in the relevant chapter of their book.
