Assalamualaikum sheikh

I want to ask regarding a hadith in sahih bukhari which states that spoils of war was not permitted to any people before us. But we found in old testament Deuteronomy 20:14 that Allah permitted bani israel the spoils of war. is there an contradiction or was it an exception?
