If one was in a state of ghaflah and did not pray the faraa’id at the beginning of his/her life then they made tawbah later on, are the years of missed prayers to be made up for or is it enough to increase one’s nawafil to compensate for the missing prayers?
I have been given multiple opinions on the issue. A clarification would be much appreciated.
Jazkum Allahu Khairan.
The dominant view of the madhhab is that these prayers do eventually have to made up according to the ability of the person. There is a second strong view in the school, chosen by Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn Rajab, and other Hanbali jurists before them, which says repentance is sufficient, because the time of these prayers have long passed. One should thus be sincere and focused in perfecting their current prayers and doing their best to perform nawafil.
