❝Ishaq b. Buhlul would present the opinions (of the Fuqaha) to Imam Ahmad b. Hanbal (r) and he would respond to each with his Madhhab (i.e. – his opinion).❞
[Tabaqat al-Hanabilah]Note: Ishaq b. Buhlul (r) was a Hanafi scholar.
Similarly it is also reported that the whole Maliki Madhhab was read to Imam Ahmad and for each position he presented his own opinion where he disagreed. Ibn Buhlul was naturally presenting to him the opinions of the Hanafi madhhab as Imam Ahmad was himself from Iraq and he responded.
This was a common way of learning back then, where one would present or read the opinions of a school or scholar to another scholar and he would respond. There are numerous reports, other than the above, which shows Imam Ahmad’s firm understanding of the Hanafi Madhhab.
