❝The companions of Imam Ahmad have two approaches [in terms of using the practice of Ahlu-l Madinah for making Tarjih]. Qadi Abu Ya’la and ibn ‘Aqeel do not see it as such, while Abu-l Khattab said it is used for giving preference, and it is reported that this [second] position is the view of Ahmad.
Imam Ahmad used to highly respect Imam Malik and the Fiqh of Ahlu-l Madinah. He would direct questioners to Ishaq [ibn Rahawaih], Abu ‘Ubaid, and Abu Thawr, and others from the Fuqaha of Ahlu-l Hadith. He would also direct them towards the classes of the Madinans, such as Abu Mus’ab al-Zuhri.❞
